It's *That* Week
Jan. 25th, 2020 05:33 pmMost of this week, I fear, has been full of things that seem deliberately coordinated to aggravate me as much as possible, from my headphone adapter malfunctioning at an absolutely terrible time to the fun task of dealing with serial subscriptions that should've been dealt with before the year began. The skating results have most definitely been included in this. Sinitsina & Katsalapov being the ones to beat Papadakis & Cizeron here would be painful enough. But while the French admittedly weren't at their best either technically or artistically, the Russians even getting higher presentation scores, no matter how slightly, definitely rings alarm bells. I don't want to spend two years of watching them rob of the French of everything up to and including Olympic gold, but it seems all too possible right now.
Also, why couldn't the Knierims have just gone away after last year? And now it looks all too possible Cain-Gribble & LeDuc won't even make it to Worlds? Though if we send Kayne & O'Shea, it's even possible the U.S. could lose its second pairs berth. Again.
I am a little happier Dmitri Aliev won, though you can't help but feel for Michel Brezina. And yes, we again have it confirmed that Kostornaia can at least beat the quad squad, and, well, if Trusova and/or Scherbakova don't skate better in Canada than they did in Austria, Rika Kihira also still has a chance. Maybe even Bradie Tennell, if she has the week of her life. But watching Mariah Bell deliver the program of the evening and still have no chance against Liu...what can you even say?
