Spending most of the year teleworking, I've probably listened to more music this year than I did the last two years combined. Including a lot of Christmas music this month. Things I have observed:
The song "Here Comes Santa Claus" is actually a very religious one, in that pat 1950s way. To the point that it helped the song eventually get annoying...
Most of the standards do get annoying after a while. Some don't, though. I haven't gotten tired of "Sleigh Ride" yet. And I still smile whenever I hear "Feliz Navidad."
It helps that I've only heard "Baby It's Cold Outside" twice so far. That might be luck, but perhaps some radio stations are finally retiring it.
Though whenever I've heard one of the many versions of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" they play these days, I've found myself thinking someone should play or even record a version with the original lyrics from the movie, because those would be all too appropriate this year.
Cheap Trick recorded a song called "I Want You for Christmas." Yes, it's a Christmas version of their big hit. I was torn between gaping and giggling when I heard it.
But I've enjoyed iHeart Radio's rock Christmas station the most. It helps that a lot of the tracks on it are original Christmas-themed songs, and even the covers of older ones tend to be distinct.
But over dinner, mom and I continue to listen to Pandora's Celtic holiday station. That music is often beautiful, and also often varied.
