Shorter work for the "shoot" prompt, posted in haste before I once again go in to work, and see if my foot actually behaves itself this time.

They started practicing with each other's weapons during that first year they took off from adventuring. )

Hastening to get this posted before a second ill-advised attempt to get into the office today. For the "Legacy" prompt. Warning for far future character deaths.

The funeral of Lady Vex'ahlia de Rolo was probably the biggest event Whitestone had seen in years. )

This morning, as is typical for Friday, I was still watching the rerun of last night's episode of Critical Role over breakfast when mom came in-just in time to hear several fucks in a row from Taliesin/Ashton, and felt the need to comment on it. I did my best to explain to her why the players were under very great stress at the time, though I an never tell exactly how much she understands about that. What was going on at that point was stressful enough, but then... )
Meanwhile, perhaps I might finally being playing again myself, since I'm now looking to attend a group-forming happy hour at the Board Room in a week and a half. This weekend, on the other hand, is looking like another one to spend in, what with the temperature hitting 90 both days. Even though I didn't manage to get my change purse last weekend, where mom and I mostly ended up getting new fancier dresses before seeing Oppenheimer, which I was duly impressed with, although her second watch of it gave my mother a few reservations. My sister played the Barbie soundtrack for us in the car both there and back, and tried to explain said move to us as best she could, since she'd seen it the previous day, though I doubt either of us will ever see it, honestly.
Also, for the first time, I'm seriously feeling the temptation to go a Critical Role movie theater event. Even if it won't be the current upcoming one, since I'll be in Oxford then.

I must say, I've been feeling vindicated lately for my keeping my personal website and continuing to post all my fic on it, even as sometimes I've wondered if there's any point to it anymore. I've also really started wishing there was a Critical Role fanfic archive in existence somewhere. The show came into being too late for it, of course, but now there are multiple reasons I'm thinking maybe we shouldn't have everything solely on one website. It's too vulnerable to outsider and insider difficulties both. I've been through enough to understand that we need AO3, but having only it is very much another matter.
Meanwhile, in a week where we are feeling a necessary loss of old content, and a day when even those of us who weren't surprised can't help but be disappointed by the Emmys again, I want to list some of the things about my current fixation that made me happy this week:

Spoilers willy nilly )

Once again I decided to deal with a dental appointment where I wasn't sure how long it would take by taking the entire day off. I went in with what I'd thought was a badly chipped back tooth which I hadn't even been able to get a real look at on my own, and after cleaning my teeth as normal, they took photos and an X-Ray, and then referred me to a dentist with a DMD instead of a DDS for root canal therapy. When I was a little girl, root canals were scary things my sister got, because she loved sweets, and I didn't like them. Though at least they feel a *little* less scary when you're 39. I actually wasn't there for all that much longer because of it.
Air went up to code red yesterday, where apparently were became one of the worse spots hit again. Still not as bad as last time, and while mom and I did suffer some effects, they were much more minor. But you could definitely still very much see the haze for most of Thursday. Or maybe we've just learned to spot it.
I hope it at least caused a few older Supreme Court justices some genuine discomfort this week. They ought to suffer some punishment for doing everything they can to fill our country with misery and hardship, especially for those who aren't straight white men, including probably more than one decision at this point that if it hasn't made the bad air partly their fault yet, it will within a few more years.
Listening through the soundtrack of Legend of Vox Machina's second season for the second time. I still can't hear "Do Not Go Far From Me" without wanting to cry. But why didn't we get the full version of "Make the Bald Man Cry?" I wanted my full-blown bawdy tavern jig, dammit!

Mom and caught the tail end of Biden's speech last night, where he once again called for unity. She, whos has been extremely anxious about us losing both her pension and my salary, thought it perfect. I just wish I could still believe he's right.
I meanwhile, spent much of the week watching my way through nearly ten hours worth of various nerdy-ass voice actors playing their way through two different worlds where things all going to the hells was not averted. And after the large amount of fun Tuesday's one-shot turned out to be, Thursdays's campaign episode was a different matter... )

Some time ago my mother made the mistake of speaking dismissively of the upcoming Barbie movie somewhere my sister could see. The next time she came over, she insisted we watch both the trailers that were out at the time. My mother was left outright confused and disturbed. When the new trailer came out last week, my sister email my mother the link. She didn't click on it. I'm not sure what happens if she comes over again before the movie comes out.
For my own part, I'm starting to find this movie's takeover of the internet meme scene kind of annoying. Although admittedly too many pairs of Critical Role characters, both romantic and otherwise, are way too good matches for the new mug shot one.
Speaking of Critical Role characters, I am once again newly in awe of Laura Bailey and her ability to portray them. Arlo Black would be a well enough as a weird girl on her own, but the way she embodies here, right down to the way she holds herself and the tremors that creep into her voice...everyone in Candela Obscura was good, but she was something else.

I finished the Caduceus puzzle yesterday. Possibly the most difficult puzzle I've ever worked on, but it really got fun once I started getting the trickier pieces put into place. Or the odder shaped pieces, and there were certainly a lot of those. My mom insisted on taking a photo and blogging about it. Trying to explain who Caduceus is to her has been interesting. She did manage to get that he was a cleric for a goddess known as the Wild Mother, and when she asked about his ears, I did end up explaining that he's basically a big pink cow. She also noted his androgyny.
For my next puzzle, I'm probably going to go to Labyrinth in DC and see what they've got there; I wouldn't mind a high fantasy one. Possibly next weekend, if I can get there Saturday, though I'm booked for Sunday and Monday they won't be open.

I'm currently participating in End OTW Racism: A Call to Action, a response to OTW dragging their heels big time about fixing their very serious racism problem, in hopes of maybe spurring them to get a move on about it. Among the things they suggested we do is post a new work to AO3 with "End Racism in the OTW" in the title as well as adding it to the titles of some of our already posted works, and when I haven't seen nearly enough of that on AO3 since the protest started on Tuesday, I managed to hammer out this Deanna ficlet for the purpose yesterday. (Spoilers for pretty much all the Wildemount episodes).

In Vesrah, Deanna uses up the last of the yarn from Catlyn's. )

So Critical Role has finally switched casts, and at quite a time to do it, too! It seems we're going to be left in suspense for a very long time about some things. (Especially if the actors do end up having to strike, which would probably result in at least a brief pause, and that's if the studios give in quickly.) But wow, was this week's episode all too enjoyable. And we thought things were wacky so far... )

I saw Guardians of the Galaxy on Monday, and that proved a very good birthday present to myself. The MCU definitely is struggling to hold itself up to a good standard, and ever since hearing this new Daredevil is leaving out Foggy and Karen I've even had a reason to outright detach from it. But there still are people making movies in that universe that care about their quality and will do everything they can to make them good, and there are still those who succeed in spades. Where you start crying (or I did, anyway) when... ) Where are the end of the well-spun story, you still feel blown away. I don't know what will happen to any of these characters, especially since you know Gunn made the hard choice with one of them you can't trust the other creators to keep to... ) But the GOTG trilogy stands on its own, a highlight of modern pop/comic book/sci-fi moviemaking.
I also finally watched the first episode of HBO's The Last of Us. I watched a great deal of Brian's recent play-through of the game-enough to get a new level of appreciation for Ashley's acting ability and also anticipate the big moments of this hour and a half episode, long enough to be a mini-movie of its own-and have high standards for Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey both to meet. Bella's no Ashley, but they both did pretty well, and so did the episode in general, especially on expanding the world and story beyond what a video game will get the chance to do. I'm looking forward to the rest. Hell, I might just keep Max just to watch the second season.
And as for last night, oh man. Lots of stuff... )

I landed a room in San Diego's Manchester Grand Hyatt. I'd put it down as my third choice, mostly because it was third in the list my sister sent me. She got in to make her request a handful of minutes after I did, but ended up with a room in a less coveted, if still downtown, hotel. We both booked, but she's talking about trying to upgrade mine to a double if we can. At least we both got rooms. I heard at least one account of someone who got in as early as I did, but still somehow got nothing!
Which was why, when I learned they'd be charging my card on Thursday, I nearly panicked, because I knew immediately the charge would get itself rejected for possible fraud. My bank always does that for any charge of more than a couple hundred, even when I'm trying to pay the dentist I've cleared charges from with them multiple times, and you'd think they'd have payments to that practice down as probably not fraud by now. So I went and contacted the bank, asking a simple question about clearing a charge beforehand, mentioning I could lose a hotel room over it. Tuesday morning I was instructed to reply to an email with the details, which I did.
And it seems they did nothing with it, because come 1 AM on Thursday, the charge was indeed rejected. Thank goodness my insomnia showed up that night, so I knew it within minutes. My bank does at least make it very easy to clear rejected charges with them, and I quickly had it cleared, my payment info resubmitted, and the charge went through about an hour later. So I've secured the room, but I am still feeling very put out about it. For the first time in my life, I've contemplated venturing out of the credit union and trying a commercial bank.
Though at least the relief over that being dealt with made me less stressed over a couple of things that have happened since, including a metro stall that would've made me miss my bus last night had I been less lucky. Although there, of course, I was also helped by getting to watch the State of the Press video. Around the time it started with Matt and Mica getting "caught" by the camera talking about a Chauffage/Crosswinds star-crossed romance, I was left to remember exactly why I love these people so much. Pity their games are showing up at a later con I won't be going to, but I suppose they might not have everything ready in time for San Diego.

After the dentist postponed my appointment right before I departed for it for the second time in a row, I finally got the top half of my mouth deep-cleaned Tuesday morning. The week and a half of anticipating it turned out to be the roughest part of it. It took a little less time than they said it would, and I didn't even have that much soreness afterwards-although between my sinuses and my uterus, I've spent much of the week on painkillers anyway. I go back next Friday-if they don't postpone that appointment too.
Also spent the week reading 1940s translation of Plato. The translation especially dated itself with the passages they chose from Symposium to present (if only because I've read that already), where they managed to erase the lesbianism from Aristophanes' story-but they didn't erase the homosexuality from his various writings, probably because that truly is impossible. But now I'm reading their selections from Republic, and finding I can't understand half of what I read, and am extremely unimpressed with the other half.
After a wild and crazy Critical Role episode last night, we were all thrown into morning today by the loss of Lance Reddick. But what's really struck me this evening is seeing the commemorations come from so many corners of the internet. He did a lot, this man did, and still we know he would have done so much more.

Hammered it out after I finished watching this week's episode of Critical Role, when my mood was darkest. I decided to sleep on it before posting, but now I'm going ahead. Warning that this contains not only spoilers and a major character death, but what is effectively a suicide.

And suddenly, Keyleth could see exactly what lay before her, for the rest of her life. )

Yesterday during our grocery run, mom looked at the supermarket flowers, only to find this week they'd turned too red and pink for our tastes. I joked it was a pity Super Bowl parties don't usually include flowers, since at least then there would've been a bit more variety. (Though I suppose the colors for this year's teams don't really lend themselves to that.) As we walked through a Giant with a few absurd-looking displays of snacks for sale, she proceeded to ask a bunch of questions about the event before dismissing it as an overly violent capitalist scam.
It'll presumably interfere with the day's watch parties, too. I did attend one yesterday, and on the second viewing, the whole dynamic of the final battle was better than I'd initially thought it was. Still, the rest of the season was stronger. I followed the streamer in question, too, though since she's from across the pond, I'm not sure how many of her streams I'll be able to watch.
missizzy: (jessiejames)
Did a little flipping through the TV channels just now, and they seem to mostly be talking about the Super Bowl. Would've thought they would've waited until tomorrow for at least some of that, but I really am out of touch with mainstream society these days. Can't seem to find any Four Continents coverage either, though at least I've been able to watch a couple of the woman's medalists on YouTube.
Maybe I really should just stick to a final weekend's worth of Legend of Vox Machina watch parties instead. But I've found I feel the opposite way about this season than I did about the last one. First season, I thought the show really got good in the final episode. Second season, it was good throughout, until the big climax... )

We finally had proper snow last week, though there wasn't much of it and it was all melted by the next day. Yesterday was one of the coldest days we've had this winter; mom and I even shortened our grocery run to minimize the amount of time we were out in it. Today's a bit better, though, and its supposed to hit the 60s next week. Not last until the weekend, though, which is kind of annoying when I may or may not have a date then.
Meanwhile, I'm been just fine these last three weekends staying in and tuning into figure skating and LOVM watch parties. I especially loved episodes 5, 7, and 8, but they've all been really good. I'm even feeling a little sad, now, that at this time next week I will have seen all of them, and there'll likely be no more until next year. (And I wouldn't expect any Mighty Nein series for even longer.)
One of the players of my Netherdeep group warned us this morning he might not be able to make it tomorrow. That's a little worrying, since we're currently in the middle of a dangerous dungeon crawl... )
missizzy: (evenstar)
To think, at the beginning of this week, we Critters knew it was going to be an eventful one, even before they dropped a surprise maproom stream on us. (And now I've still got an hour left to watch on it. Yes, I've actually been watching the VOD after being stuck at work unable to stream it when it was happening.) But did anyone think they'd announce more animated stuff *now*? Honestly, I'm still a little worried about the long-term, since the critics will insist that all the campaign adaptations will tell pretty similar stories about bands of misfits fighting monsters and such. (They tend to miss things like The Mighty Nein's story sometimes being a little more complicated than that.) But it'll be worth it for however much we get to see. Especially if they do adapt the Calamity as a movie.
It was quite a week for my group to resume our Call of the Netherdeep campaign, after an involuntary month off. I still can't remember exactly where Schist got the wand of paralysis that is currently sitting in her inventory. She got to use counterspell for the first time, which probably saved most of us, since we were fighting a pretty powerful caster, and even with the fireball avoided she went down to only ten hit points after her second attack.
